Demi Lovato who came out as a non-binary in May recently opened up about people mispronouncing their gender mistakenly. The pop star took to their instagram stories to say it’s okay if people misgender them mistakenly as it’s “a huge transition” for them too.

“If you misgender me – That’s okay,” the 28-year-old wrote. “I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!”

“As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, And as long as I remember my truth, The Shift will come naturally. I’m just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process,” they added.

Lovato added that change in pronouns can be confusing for some and difficult to remember but it’s all about your intention. “It’s important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it’s okay remember that I love you, and to keep going #nonbinaryawarenessweek.”

Lovato came out by sharing “I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

Lovato had earlier thanked fellow pop star Lizzo for correcting a paparazzo who misgendered them when asking Lizzo about a possible performance with Lovato.

“@lizzobeeating you f–king queen I love you, thank you” they captioned a post thanking her.
