For the first time in 31 years at the World Athletics Championships, the USA won all three medals in the men’s 100-meter final as Fred Kirley took first place.

On Sunday, the 27-year-old narrowly beat out Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell, finishing in 9.86 seconds.

Only 0.02 seconds separated Kirley from Bracy and Bromell, and only 0.002 seconds separated the second and third place finishers.

Since Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, and Dennis Mitchell went gold-silver-bronze at the 1991 champions league in Tokyo, this was the first finish in which the USA took home all three medals in the event.

“I know today opened up many doors for me,” Kerley said.
